Description
A Fiddler’s Tale, written for clarinet and bassoon, trumpet and trombone, violin and double bass, and percussion with narration, is based on the classic temptation story of a Faustian bargain. In Marsalis’ work, a violinist sells her soul to the devil for the creativeness that will bring her fame and fortune. But she struggles with her own knowledge that she is not in control. She realizes that she can only resolve her scruples by breaking the bargain. The piece intentionally parallels a similar suite by Stravinsky.
Total performance time is about 68 minutes.
